Preventing Ground Source Water Pollution

Clean drinking water is something we take for granted. But there are things you can do to help preserve and protect our rural water supply. By following these tips, you can help prevent ground source water pollution.

  • Dispose of pesticides, motor oil, and other chemicals properly. Chemicals and heavy metals eventually work their way into the water table – and it’s this ground water that provides the majority of the potable water in Oklahoma.
  • Report to local law enforcement anyone you suspect may be disposing of these chemicals in an unsafe or unlawful manner.
  • Reduce your use of lawn and garden chemicals since these chemicals may seep into drinking water.
  • Report suspicious activity around area water wells or water towers.
  • Have your septic system inspected and pumped every 3 to 5 years so that it operates efficiently and properly.
